Opowiem wam historyjke pewnego zagonka kapusty. Sam uslyszalem ja dwa tygodnie temu od czlowieka, który ja dokladnie zna, i który na zyczenie moze cytowac nazwami miejscowosci, nazwiskami, itp. Spodziewam sie, ze zainte- resuje ona was tak samo, jak zainteresowala mnie.
A bylo to tak:
W tej chwili w Polsce duzo jest PGR-ów, które teraz juz leza odlogiem, gdzie juz zgnila na pniu pszenica czy pomidory, bo do skupu nie da sie oddac, bo tam nie chca brac A w miedzyczasie pszenice czy pomidory przywoza wagonami z Holandii, Belgii, czy innej Francji, bo jest tam tansza i szuka sie tam dla niej nowych rynków zbytu, miedzy innymi w Polsce. Tak bylo i w ponizej przytaczanym przypadku.
Jeden z PGR-ów, jeszcze troche dzialajacy, jeszcze niezupelnie upadly, mial zagon kapusty na pniu, juz gotowej do wyciecia. Kapusta byla ladna, zdrowa, gotowa do wycinania i zawozu na skup. Ale skup krecil glowa: Nie, oni nie wezma. Co tu robic?
Jeden z dzialaczy w tym PGR-ze dowiedzial sie skads, ze byc moze Czesi kupiliby te kapuste. Zwrócil sie wiec do Czechów, a oni owszem, powiedzieli:
– Przyslijcie nam taka jedna glówke, to my ja zbadamy.
– I zbadali. I tak sie zdziwili, ze nie chcieli uwierzyc wlasnym badaniom. Bo ta glówka kapusty okazala sie tak zdrowa i czysta, tak nieskazona, ze Czesi nie mogli wyjsc z podziwu i czym predzej przyslali dwóch swoich ekspertów, aby te sytuacje dokladniej zbadac. No i co?
Eksperci obejrzeli zagonek kapusty, porobili badanie i pomiary, a potem wybrali dwie inne glówki, ot tak, na chybil trafil. I powiedzieli:
– Wezmiemy jeszcze o, te! I jeszcze o, tamta! — I zabrali te dwie glówki na dalsze badania. A po badaniach wykupili wszystkie glówki i zaraz zaczeli sie ubiegac o kupno calego zagonka!
A wiecie dlaczego?
Otóz dlatego, ze mimo, iz woda w Polsce jest mocno zanieczyszczona, to ziemia polska jest jeszcze stosunkowo czysta i nieskazona nawozami sztucznymi i chemikaliami.
I jest duzo czysciejsza od ziemi w innych krajach euro- pejskich, szczególnie w tych polozonych na zachód od Polski. A jest to dlatego, ze w wiekszosci przypadków polski rolnik niechetnie nawozil te ziemie nawozami sztucznymi, a duzo chetniej uzywal do tego naturalnego nawozu, gnoju.
Sam nie jestem rolnikiem, ale mówia mi ludzie, którzy sie na tym znaja, ze warzywa i jarzyny na g … najlepiej rosna!
Dwa tygonie temu zetknalem sie z fundacja, która wziela sobie za cel wykupienie kilku czy kilkunastu lezacych odlogiem PGR-ów w Polsce. Ta fundacja, dzialajaca na terenie Chicago, juz od trzech lat jezdzi do Polski, gdzie po szczególowych rozmowach z Ministerstwem Rolnictwa doprowadzila juz do tego, ze obiecano im, iz w momencie, w którym wykaza sie aktem kupna pierwszego takiego PGR-u, dostana od Ministerstwa Rolnictwa natychmiastowa pozyczke na milion zlotycch (ok. 25o tysiecy dolarów) na zagospodarowanie tej ziemi. I te obietnice maja na pismie! I maja juz konkretnie wyznaczony bank w Polsce, który obiecal im te pozyczke!
No, wiec. W Polsce jest juz ta sprawa dobrze zaawansowana, juz tylko tam czeka Ministerstwo Rolnictwa na to, aby ta Fundacja przywiozla z Ameryki potrzebne fundusze, i aby te akcje ruszyc z miejsca. I czekaja tak od siedmiu miesiecy, bo tu fundacja spotkala sie z akcja opózniajaca.
Fundacja zwrócila sie do jednego z najwiekszych dzialaczy polonijnych z prosba o pomoc w zdobyciu gotówki potrzebnej na pierwszy krok, na ten pierwszy PGR. A dzialacz milczy …
Jak sam dowiedzialem sie o tym zastoju – postanowilem, aby to ruszyc z miejsca – nie czekajac na zwolniona reakcje tego dzialacza. I juz zwolalismy na ten cel pierwsze zebranie informacyjne, aby powiadomic rodaków, ze taka akcja istnieje, ze dosyc duzo zrobilo sie juz w Polsce, i ze koniecznie potrzebna jest dalsza akcja tu, zanim dotychczasowe wysilki nie pójda na marne.
To pierwsze zebranie informacyjne odbylo sie dnia 8 mar- ca o godz. 7 mej wieczorem w siedzibie Zwiazku Klubów Polskich pod adresem 5835 West Diversey, w Chicago. Nasza maksyma jest dotarcie do ludzi myslacych podobnie jak my. Nie mamy zas zamiaru, na starcie, wyludzac od nich pieniadze! Zebranie jako pierwsze bylo cokolwiek nieudolnie zorganizowane, za co ponosze wine wylacznie ja, i juz na przyszlosc obiecuje poprawe. Nastepne takie zebrania informacyjne odbywac sie beda w kazdy czwartek tygodnia, o godz. 7:30 wieczorem, siedzibie Zwiazku Klubów Polskich przy 5935 West Diversey, Wstep jest wolny i nie wymaga wczesniejszej rejestracji.
Nauczony juz doswiadczeniem obiecuje, ze te wszystkie nastepne zebrania beda juz lepiej zorganizowane i beda juz teraz przebiegac o wiele sprawniej.

A CABBAGE PATCH STORY
The POLISH FIELDS IN POLISH HANDS cycle

Let me tell you a story of a certain cabbage patch. I heard it two weeks ago from a man who knows it well and who can quote the names of places and people involved, etc. I expect that you will find this interesting, just as I found it when I heard it.
This is what happened:
Right now there are many agricultural cooperatives in Poland (Panstwowe Gospodarstwa Rolne or PGR) which are defunct, with barren and agriculturally inactive land, with crops wilted and never harvested, where wheat or tomatoes rotted in the field because they couldn’t be sold to official buying centers, who simply don’t want to buy these crops anymore. Meanwhile wheat or tomatoes are coming by a carload from Holland, Belgium or France, because they are cheaper there and looking for new markets, and Poland is seen as such a new market. Hence the story cited below.
One of these PGR’s, still somewhat active and not yet completely defunct, had a cabbage patch ready to harvest. The cabbages were nice, and healthy, and ready to be cut and sold. But the buying center didn’t want to buy. So what to do?
One PGR manager heard somewhere that perhaps the Czechs might be interested in buying these cabbages, so he contacted the Czechs, and sure enough, they were. „Just send one cabbage over for testing!” they said.
And they tested it. And were so surprised by the quality and purity of that head that they had trouble believing the results of their own test, so they sent two experts to check things out.
Those two experts looked the cabbage patch over, did some on-the-spot testing and measuring, and chose two more cabbages at random, oh, maybe this one, and maybe that one there, and took them for further testing. After these tests, they bought out the entire crop of cabbages and started making inquiries about buying the whole cabbage patch!
And do you know why?
Because even though the waters in Poland are very polluted indeed, the fields are relatively healthy and pure and haven’t been exposed to excessive amounts of chemical fertilizers. Thus, these lands are much cleaner than lands in other European countries, especially those located west of Poland.
And that’s because most Polish farmers are reluctant to use artificial, chemical fertilizers and would much rather use the natural fertilizer: manure.
I am not a farmer, but those in the know tell me that grains and vegetables grow much better on s … , ah, manure!
Just two weeks ago I met some people from a foundation that wants to purchase several such defunct, abandoned PGR lands. This foundation, active in Chicago for three years, has been periodically visiting Poland, where, after some concrete and promising talks with the Polish Ministry of Agriculture, they secured a promise from that Ministry that the minute they show their first certificate of sale for such untilled land – they will immediately obtain a low – percentage loan for one million zloty’s (about $250,000) for revitalizing and reentering this land into production. And this promise is in writing, and a specific bank has been designated to issue that loan!
So, This action is already well advanced in Poland. The Ministry is just waiting for this foundation to bring the necessary funds from America, so this program can be put into action.
And they’ve been waiting for more than seven months, because here this action has hit a snag.
The foundation approached one of the major Polish movers-and-shakers in Chicago requesting help in finding funds needed for that first step, for that first PGR. But he remains silent … When I heard about this I thought that perhaps I could help to move this project from a standstill without waiting for that slow reaction from the bigwig.
So, we had called a series of information meetings to tell the public about the existing action, and how much was already accomplished in Poland, and that further action was urgently needed before these efforts go to waste.
We wished to contact people whose thinking was similar to ours, and not to start a fund drive right away. We hoped that if they already thought like we do – they would find their way to us.
This first information meeting was held on Friday, March 8, 2002, at 7:00p.m. at the United Polish Clubs located at 5835 W. Diversey in Chicago. The meeting was not well organized, for which I alone am to blame, but I promise to improve in the future.
The following meetings will be better and will be held weekly on Thursdays, at 7:30 p.m. at the same address, and should last no longer than one hour. There is no admission charge and no reservations are required. We are inviting all interested parties, as well as those who might just wish to find out what’s what.
