Death Toll Rises to 30
Polish American Congress Sending Assistance
Four years after suffering catastrophic floods, Poland is once again experiencing heavy flooding. More than 30 lives have been lost and tens of thousands of people have been affected. Tens of millions of dollars in property losses to homes, businesses, farms, roads and bridges have occurred.
Just like four years ago, the Polish American Congress is among the first to offer assistance. Working closely with public officials, local relief agencies and the Church in Poland, the PAC has coordinated sending emergency relief supplies including commercial disinfectant cleaning agents (purchased in Poland from the manufacturer); commercial chain saws to clear ruble, trees and shrubs; and commercial water pumps to clear basements and low lying areas from water and muddy debris.
The floods this year are much more widespread than four years ago. Exact estimates of losses will only be figured after the waters subside. Immediate needs are for emergency rescue, blankets and disinfectants for cleanup. Later, additional assistance will be needed for rebuilding schools, businesses, roads and bridges.
The Polish American Congress Charitable Foundation (PACCF) immediately provided cleanup assistance when the floods hit Gdansk during the first week of July. The PACCF has already purchased disinfectant cleanser to be immediately distributed to areas in need, as well as commercial water pumps which have been requested by several wojewodships.
PAC state divisions are being urged to coordinate fund raising efforts in their respective areas. The National Office of the PAC will coordinate these efforts on the national level so that maximum benefits will occur in an efficient and timely manner. With this coordinated effort, the PACCF can use volume buying of the national organization, along with donations from manufacturers, to send help to where it is needed most.
Donations in the form of checks can be sent to the Polish American Congress Charitable Foundation, 5711 N. Milwaukee Ave., Chicago, IL 60646. Donations can also be made by credit card on the PAC website (http://www.polamcon.org). All donations will go to flood relief. There are no administrative fees, and your donation will be acknowledged in writing. For more information call Pam Komorowski, Administrator, at the National Office: 773-763-9944.
PACCF IS A 501 (C)(3) TAX EXEMPT ORGANIZATION. ALL DONATIONS ARE EXEMPT TO THE FULLEST EXTENT OF THE LAW.
